What is abhyanga?

Abhyanga (pronounced ub-yun-gah) is the traditional ayurvedic full-body massage performed with warm herbal oils. It's one of the oldest and most widely practiced treatments in ayurvedic medicine — used for centuries as a daily and occasional ritual for circulation, nervous system balance and skin nourishment.

What makes it different from a regular massage

The oil is the point. Before your session, the oil is gently warmed — this is what separates abhyanga from a standard dry or lightly-oiled massage. Warm oil penetrates the skin more easily, softens the tissue before deeper work begins, and stays warm throughout the session, which is part of why abhyanga tends to feel deeply calming rather than purely physical.

The strokes are long and rhythmic, following the direction of circulation, with more focused attention at the joints. It's a full-body treatment — head to feet — rather than targeted spot work, though it can still release specific areas of tension along the way.

What it's used for

It's a wellness and relaxation treatment, not a medical one — a good fit for anyone who wants a genuinely restorative hour, whether that's after weeks of travel, a stretch of poor sleep, or just because it's been too long since you slowed down.

What to expect in a session

At Shaantha, abhyanga is a 60-minute treatment. You'll be asked where you're holding tension so the pace and pressure can be adjusted to you — every session is tailored, not templated. Because the oil is warm and generous, plan to shower afterwards rather than head straight to dinner.

Treatments happen at Mandala, a calm wellness space in the heart of Sagres — or as a home visit if you're staying in an Airbnb, villa or guesthouse nearby. The table travels; the treatment doesn't change.

Abhyanga or sports massage?

If your priority is deep relaxation and a traditional ritual, abhyanga is the one. If you're recovering from training, surfing or a physically active trip, you may want more targeted deep-tissue work — see ayurvedic vs. sports massage for the comparison. Shaantha's combination treatment blends both in a single 60-minute session.

Abhyanga is 60 minutes · 50€, at Mandala Sagres or as a home visit.
